We spent Christmas with our son and family in IJburg which is a residential neighbourhood currently (2011) under construction in the east of Amsterdam. It is situated in the IJ Lake and is being built on artificial islands which have been raised from the lake. The first residents moved into their houses on Rieteiland in November 2002.
Therefore the whole area looks very modern.
Along the artificial canals houses are built and if you have a boat you can just keep it in front of your house door. There are lots and lots of flats and houses squeezed together side by side, but
the overlook is not ugly at all. In fact it is a nice modern area with a lot of water activities
Modern "Venice"
Houses with the boats instead of a car
Green parks and sport's places. It must be very nice in spring and summer.
A beautiful leisure harbor
Many restaurants and cosy cafés
a very modern "open fire"
The most strangest bicycles I have ever seen
The kitchen window is just on the sidewalk. Most of the people have curtains to protect their privacy, this family has put a huge buddha face in the window.
If you have time read the history of Ijburg here the gain of land from the sea is quiet amazing !

Thank you for a tour..My husband great great grand father left Holland I believe near a town call Cyuk (might not have it spelled right) but he was 12 or so.
Coffee is on.
amazing how they build up land to build on Its good the do that. They should also build walls just in case.
With canals the place is beautiful.
This is fascinating, Gattina! Did the developers do compaction to the soil to keep the land and buildings from settling? It looks very state-of-the-art. My husband's grandparents came to the US from the Netherlands in the early 1900s, so I have an affinity to the Netherlands, even though I don't have any Dutch ancestry.
What a terrific development, Gattina! It does look like a really delightful area to live in! Love your captures for the day! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and wishing you a very Happy New Year!

Love that Buddha!
It looks like a very modern Venice!
What a lovely and modern neighborhood. I love the open fireplace. Very pretty. It is cool that homeowners have boats instead of cars, or do they have both? Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
An ultra-modern water city, but I have to say I prefer the pretty village that was built on islands among canals many years ago, I don't remember the name.
Looks like a great place for Toby to grow up at. Love the modern venice-look - and how wonderful to be able to anchor a boat outside the home! Love that feature!
ciao,
interesting blog ! following you ....follow back?

Thank you for this link to the modern town of IJburg. It's beautiful if you like the modern architecture.
It is strange but the initial letter of IJburg is "IJ" and not "J". This is a Dutch letter and in many dictionaries replaced by the "Y", which is a foreign letter to us. We have only a few words beginning with "Y".
